Seed processors in Europe work with a commercial promise that is more demanding than a clean-looking bag. Each lot must match its defined variety, grade and buyer specification. WESORT helps seed plants remove visible off-type seeds, discolored or damaged seeds and foreign material while keeping the accepted lot consistent for packing, further treatment or distribution.
What WESORT solves: it converts visible seed-quality rules into a repeatable inspection and ejection process. Depending on the crop and sample, the system can evaluate color, shape, size, texture, surface damage and visible foreign material. Optical sorting supports quality control; it does not replace germination testing, varietal certification, moisture analysis or other required laboratory checks. The commercial risk is often a mixed lot, not one dramatic defect
A seed lot can contain a small percentage of off-color seeds, cracked or shrivelled seeds, insect-damaged seeds, immature seeds, broken pieces, weed seeds and stones. The visual difference may be subtle, and the product may be handled at high speed. Manual picking can remove obvious pieces, but it is difficult to keep the same boundary across shifts, varieties and seasons.
European processors also need to protect good material. If the sorter is made too aggressive, the plant may reduce reject contamination but lose valuable seed with it. The correct solution balances lot purity, good-seed recovery and the buyer’s defined tolerance.
Which seed conditions can be evaluated?
Visible target Typical commercial concern WESORT test focus Off-type or discolored seeds Lot appearance and variety consistency. Approved color references and borderline examples. Cracked, broken or shrivelled seeds Physical quality, handling loss and pack appearance. Shape, area, size and surface condition. Insect damage or visible holes Unwanted visible damage in the packed or treated lot. Only defects presented clearly on the visible surface. Weed seeds and plant fragments Lot cleanliness and manual inspection burden. Color, shape and contrast against the crop seed. Stones, soil or other foreign material Contamination risk and downstream equipment protection. Visible separation, with mechanical, magnetic or other controls as needed. The WESORT product center covers sorting equipment for seeds, grains, legumes and other food materials. A seed processor should still test its own crop because optical separation depends on size, surface reflection, moisture, dust, overlap and the target standard.
From a seed specification to a machine recipe
- Define the accepted lot. Identify the seed appearance and quality your buyer will accept.
- Classify the rejects. Separate off-type seed, damaged seed, weed seed and foreign material rather than mixing every target into one category.
- Include borderline material. Borderline examples show where good-seed carry-over and inconsistent decisions are likely.
- Choose the viewing route. Small, free-flowing seed may suit a precision chute arrangement; more complex surfaces may require multi-view evaluation.
- Verify the outputs. Check accepted-seed recovery and reject purity together before approving the program.
Why small seed and multi-sided seed need careful testing
Small vegetable and herb seeds may present only a limited visible surface, while beans, maize seed and larger coated seeds can rotate and expose different sides. A single camera view may not see every surface mark. WESORT can evaluate AI multi-view inspection where the defect is visible but may face away from a conventional camera.
Four-view inspection can improve exterior coverage of top, bottom and side surfaces. It is not a claim that the system detects hidden embryo damage, germination potential or chemical treatment quality. Those decisions remain with the appropriate seed laboratory and certification process.
What a European processor gains from a repeatable visual standard
Once the accepted and rejected examples are confirmed, operators can compare new lots with the approved reference, load the closest program and monitor the accepted and reject outlets. This reduces dependence on one person’s visual judgement and makes a quality decision easier to communicate between production, quality assurance and sales.
WESORT’s seed solution supports material-led testing, program adjustment, equipment selection and remote technical communication. A plant can discuss different seed types, particle sizes and target defects rather than buying one generic “seed sorter” setting.
WESORT’s seed application materials include customer-site examples for vegetable seed, medicinal-material seed and multi-view seed sorting. These references demonstrate the application route; final performance for a European crop still requires the customer’s own representative lot and acceptance standard.
See the WESORT customer stories for additional application examples.
What should be measured before a seed lot is released?
- Accepted-seed recovery and the amount carried into reject.
- Reject purity for off-type seed, damaged seed and foreign material.
- Performance on borderline seeds and mixed size ranges.
- Stability during continuous feeding, dust changes and batch changes.
- Whether a recovery or second pass is needed for the commercial standard.
- Confirmation that laboratory germination and certification procedures remain separate.
Test Your European Seed Lot with WESORT
Send representative accepted, rejected and borderline seeds together with the crop, seed form, target defect list, throughput and buyer specification. WESORT can evaluate visible separability and recommend a practical seed sorting configuration.
