Integrated Material, Testing & Compliance Support Guide 2026

Moving a bio-based material from a laboratory formulation to commercial supply involves far more than selecting a polymer. Formulation development, processing validation, testing, certification and regulatory alignment must be handled as one continuous chain, because a gap at any single link delays the entire project. Shanghai Sipeng Technology Ltd., operating under the brand SYNLIFE, has organized its capabilities around precisely that requirement: an integrated model in which material development, testing support and compliance work advance together rather than in sequence.

What “Integrated” Support Actually Covers at SYNLIFE

Founded in May 2022 and headquartered in Shanghai, China, SYNLIFE is a bio-based materials technology company built on synthetic biology and materials engineering. Its stated differentiation is the combination of capabilities across biological manufacturing, material development, formulation optimization, process scale-up, manufacturing and application development within a single organization. That combination is what allows the company to develop materials around actual processing conditions and end-use requirements, instead of focusing only on material synthesis.

      Technical Capabilities Behind the Material

Four capability layers sit underneath every project:

      • Synthetic biology: strain development, metabolic pathway optimization, fermentation process development, and biological manufacturing.
      • Materials engineering: polymer formulation, modification, compounding, processing optimization, and application development.
      • Application engineering: development around real manufacturing processes including injection molding, extrusion, film processing, thermoforming, and spinning.

Intellectual property accumulated across synthetic biology and materials development — including multiple patents and proprietary technical know-how — supports this work.

      Data-Driven Testing and Iteration

Biological and material R&D at SYNLIFE is supported by experimental data, formulation data, process data, and application-testing results. Data-driven methods are used to improve experimental efficiency and accelerate screening and optimization, and experimental feedback is continuously incorporated back into formulation and process development. For buyers, this matters because testing is not a one-off gate at the end of a project; it is an input that reshapes the formulation.

      Compliance and Certification Support

Compliance work is handled at the level of the specific product grade and target market. Per the company’s knowledge base, product-specific compostability, bio-based content and food-contact compliance testing/certification is carried out where applicable. Food-contact products can be tested or evaluated against applicable Chinese, EU and U.S. requirements depending on the product and destination market.

Certain products have obtained third-party compostability certification, and certain products have undergone bio-based content testing. SYNLIFE’s own materials guidance notes that certification bodies, standards, certificate numbers and applicable product grades must always be specified when certification claims are used externally — and that compostability claims must correspond to the specific product grade, applicable standard and actual third-party certificate. Internal and third-party testing data should be quoted together with relevant test conditions, methods and product specifications rather than presented as universal performance claims.

The Service Model: Seven Ways to Engage

SYNLIFE’s service scope extends from material and formulation development through processing optimization, product design, testing support, scale-up and commercialization. The engagement models are:

      1. Raw material supply
      2. Material customization
      3. Joint product development
      4. Application development
      5. Finished product OEM/ODM
      6. Process and technical support
      7. Pilot and scale-up support

Deployment can follow any of these routes, with projects supported from material selection and formulation development through process optimization, product validation, testing, scale-up and commercial supply.

Product Platforms Supported by the Service Model

The resin platform includes the YOGTIC® series: YOGTIC-05 high-transparency bio-based polyester materials with good toughness; YOGTIC-15 high-performance natural-color bio-based polyester with improved thermal resistance compared with conventional PLA grades and balanced toughness and rigidity; and the YOGTIC-08 / 18 thermoforming series developed for sheet extrusion and thermoforming, used in food trays, packaging trays and other thermoformed products. Revertic covers biodegradable material applications, while Neotic covers non-biodegradable functional material applications, together addressing additional application-specific compound needs.

Film solutions include ZeRoll® compostable cling film for household, food-service and retail applications, and NeoRoll® functional films. Development work also covers MAP meat packaging film, fruit and vegetable packaging film, and bakery and food packaging film, with focus areas including oxygen barrier, water-vapor barrier, carbon-dioxide transmission, heat-sealing and mechanical performance, and food-contact compliance.

Textile materials span Yogric® PLA-based fibers, yarns and fabrics and Palmric® PTT-based high-performance textile materials, where PTT can incorporate bio-based 1,3-propanediol as a key raw material. On the ingredient side, Biowatol® 2,3-butanediol is a bio-fermented polyol positioned for personal-care and formulation applications, alongside N-acetylneuraminic acid, L-valine, phosphatidylserine, trehalose, malic acid, pyruvic acid and chlorella-related products.

Case Examples of Integrated Application Support

Case 1 — Hero Bio-based Fountain Pen. Bio-based resin was applied to plastic components of the fountain pen, replacing selected conventional plastic components. The result was a commercialized bio-based fountain pen application that also participated in regional cultural-product and souvenir selection activities.

Case 2 — Platinum GK-50 Eco Pen Application. High-transparency YOGTIC® resin was used for selected transparent pen components, demonstrating the feasibility of applying high-transparency bio-based materials to commercial writing instruments. Performance comparisons with conventional PC or other plastics are stated only where supported by corresponding test or product data.

Case 3 — Shanghai Jiao Tong University Memorial T-shirt. A PLA-based fiber and textile application developed into finished apparel products and introduced through Shanghai Jiao Tong University-related retail and cultural-product channels.

      Research Ecosystem, Scale and Recognition

SYNLIFE’s founding and technical teams have research backgrounds connected with synthetic biology research associated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In November 2022 the company established a strategic partnership with Angel Yeast, and in December 2023 the two formally established a joint venture to advance industrialization and commercialization of bio-manufactured products. In April 2025, SYNLIFE established cooperation with the Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, to develop bulk bio-based monomer products using methanol as feedstock and advance one-carbon biomanufacturing. These collaborations support upstream biological manufacturing and technology development rather than representing direct supply relationships for every commercial product.

The company employs 50+ people, including researchers and engineers in synthetic biology, material development, product development and commercialization, and operates a Shanghai R&D Center with more than 2,000 m² of research and development space, supported by manufacturing and supply-chain capabilities in Jiangsu, including Nantong. Funding includes a Pre-A round of nearly RMB 100 million completed in October 2024 and a Pre-A+ round of tens of millions of RMB completed in May 2025. SYNLIFE is a Shanghai “Specialized and Innovative” Enterprise and received the CIIF Bio-Manufacturing Special Award in 2025 for its YOGTIC-05C bio-based resin. In 2026, the company was selected as one of the 16 winners of Tencent’s CarbonX Program 2.0, following a global selection process involving approximately 660 applications from 54 countries and regions and 50 finalists.

Why an Integrated Partner Changes Project Outcomes

Pricing and feasibility in bio-based materials depend on material type and formulation, bio-based content, performance requirements, certification and compliance needs, processing difficulty, order volume and customization requirements. SYNLIFE’s commercial value proposition centers on application performance, product differentiation, sustainability, processing compatibility and commercialization feasibility — helping bridge the gap between laboratory innovation and commercial-scale application, and reducing the coordination burden of managing material supply, testing and compliance as separate workstreams.
